Historic Paint Finishes Report: The Original Finishes of the Verandah House, Corinth, Mississippi

Room 101

Note: This Room 101 has been altered and replacement of some woodwork. Nearly all of the baseboards may have been replaced during the 1921-1929 renovations that may have been necessitated by earlier damage. All of the original woodwork was very carefully stripped of the accumulated paint, except for one area of the baseboard molding. The other very important sample was that discovered under the escutcheon on the Door to the Hall 100.

Other changes and additions that were made in 1921-1929 are the mantel, which clearly dates to that time of renovation and the entablature seen in this photograph. The entablature is wood and is installed over the finish plaster: it may be more recent than 1921-1929.

The ceiling was replaced with fiber board after the house became property of the City of Corinth in the 1960’s.

It is also possible that the caps on the doors and window frames were added in this room during the 1921- 1929 renovations. These caps are found in the Hall 100, but not in any of the other rooms. Unfortunately because of the removal of the paint finishes in the 1921-1929 renovation, the paint finishes are not conclusive. It may be that examination of the nails may be required to ascertain if these elements are added or original.

Examination of Samples:

Ceiling and Cornice: The ceiling is fiber board and was installed after the house came into public ownership. The Cornice appears to date to ca. 1921-1929.

Room 101: Cornice, made of wood elements, applied over finish plaster surface.
