and this would date to ca. 1875 or post 1878 (Huggins). Note the paper layer (4). This appears to be a lining paper that was applied in the 1921-1929 renovation to create a good surface for the finish of that period (5). There is a delamination fracture (D) at the 1921-1929 finish, indicating a long period of exposure. Finish 6 may be at the time of the City ownership: there is a thin layer of particulate on the surface (P). Finish 7 is an oil based enamel finish. The joint compound layer (8) is in preparation for the most recent repainting.

 

Note: Ceiling of Room 102

 

The ceiling of Room 102 showed remains of a white distemper finish to that which was preserved on the ceiling of the Closet 101, above. The ceiling of Room 102 was scraped and treated with a thin natural resin coating (appeared to be shellac) in preparation for repainting during the renovations of 1921-1929.
