Historic Paint Finishes Report: The Original Finishes of the Verandah House, Corinth, Mississippi

Conclusions and Recommendations for the Restoration of Room 101

The changes and additions that were made in 1921-1929 will have to be removed prior to any restoration. These are as follows:

  1. Entablature: the wood entablature and soffit moldings are additions and should be removed. The removal of these additions, may make it possible to find wallpaper fragments or additional early paint finishes under the 1920’s entablature. Additional information may be found.
  2. Mantel: the mantel was made and installed in 1921-1929 and should be removed. Studying the wall surface under the present later mantel may indicate an outline of the original mantel. In addition, there may be fragments of early wallpaper or paints found under the present mantel.

Pending the removal of the added features of this room, the present data supports the following restoration:

Ceiling surface: White distemper finish, based on surviving finish in Hall 100:

Finish: White Benjamin          Moore 0C-61   Gloss level: Flat

Walls: Wallpaper suitable to the ca. 1857 period

All woodwork, including the Doors:

White: Benjamin Moore OC-57          Gloss level: Semi-gloss
